Herman" Fold Martial Herman (1759-1795) was a figure of the French Revolution, best known for his role in the Revolutionary Court. Trained as a lawyer, in 1793 he became public prosecutor at the tribunal criminel du Nord in Arras, where he was close to Jacobin ideas. In 1794, at the height of the Terror, he was appointed president of the Paris Revolutionary Court, one of the regime's most feared institutions. In this position, he was involved in the expeditious administration of justice, which led to numerous death sentences. After the fall of Robespierre on July 27, 1794 (Thermidor 9), the political climate changed abruptly. Herman was arrested in his turn and finally guillotined in 1795, a victim of the political upheaval that followed the end of the Terror.
