LE LIÈVRE (family). - COUSIN DE COURCHAMPS (Maurice)]. Manus - Lot 7
LE LIÈVRE (family). - COUSIN DE COURCHAMPS (Maurice)]. Manuscript entitled "Armoiries chronologiques des principales générations et alliances de la Maison de Le Lièvre", signed "M.C.C. fecit 1825". 1825. 45 ff. bound in a large folio volume (28 x 43.5 cm), brown morocco, wide ribbed spine decorated with gilded mosaic Gothic motifs, large mosaic decoration, gilded and cold-stamped decoration on the boards, consisting of a large rosette in a double frame, one architectural - the other geometrical, decorated corners, inner frame in the same leather decorated with architectural and geometrical motifs, gilded edges (Thouvenin); all set in a later calfskin box with fine brown latticework decoration lined with silk, worn, fogged, without clasps. IMPORTANT COLOR HERALD ILLUSTRATION comprising some 90 representations of coats of arms. The work traces the family history back to the 11th century, evoking a medieval prelate, a comrade-in-arms of Du Guesclin, several lords of Bougival, two generals of the Empire, and alliances with families such as Bragelogne, Chabanais, Galliot de Genouillac, Beauvau-Craon or Caylus. LUXURIOUS MANUSCRIT COMMANDED BY THE FAMILY, no doubt the Marquis Adélaïde-Blaise-François Le Lièvre de La Grange, "chief of names and arms", who was a general in the Empire and had an arm blown off by a cannonball at the Battle of Essling, or by his son, the future politician Édouard Le Lièvre de La Grange, the last person to be the subject of an illustrated page here. The author is said to be the literary scholar Maurice Cousin de Courchamps, who signed the title with his initials, and who is known to have had a small number of copies printed around the same time, in Paris by Trouvé, of a notice entitled Généalogie de la Maison de Le Lieure de La Grange. Généalogie de très haut et très puissant messire Adélaïde-Blaise-François Le Lieure, chevalier, marquis de La Grange, de Fourilles, etc. SPECTACULAR ROMANTIC MOSAIC CATHEDRAL BINDING SIGNED BY JOSEPH THOUVENIN. A pupil of Bozérian jeune, Joseph Thouvenin (1790-1834) set up on his own in 1813, and became one of France's most renowned bookbinders under the Restoration. ATTACHED, a very fine heraldic drawing in color, depicting the large Empire coat of arms of General Count Armand-Charles-Louis Le Lièvre de La Grange (veteran of Marengo, Essling, Wagram...), brother of Adélaïde-Blaise-François, and intended for a work by publisher Léon Curmer.
