" AN ECHO OF THE TERRIBLE RIVALRY BETWEEN HENRI III AND HIS BROTHER FRANÇOIS. Wishing to be more closely associated with the exercise of power, François de Valois, Duke of Alençon, joined the "Malcontents", an alliance of moderate Catholics and Protestants calling for political reform and less absolute central power. He fomented two plots and finally fled the Court in 1575, joining forces with the leader of the Protestant armies, the Prince de Condé. After the Edict of Beaulieu in 1576, François' position was strengthened and he was made Duke of Anjou. He then embarked on a new adventure: called upon by the rebellious Netherlands to become their ruler, just as the revolt against Spanish occupation was beginning, he signed the Treaty of Plessis-Lès-Tours (September 1580) with them and set out to lead them in February 1582: he failed to establish himself firmly there and, having fallen ill, died in 1584. Henri III bought Château d'Ollainville as a retreat near Paris on September 20, 1576, and stayed there several times: October and November 1576, October 1577, January, July, August, September, October, November 1578, January 1579, October, November 1580, and March, June, November 1581.
