FESCH (JOSEPH). - Lot 44
FESCH (JOSEPH). Letter signed "Cardinal Fesch" to Romain Hamelin. Rome, 14 germinal an XII [4 april 1804]. 1 p. in-4, address on spine; marginal tears due to opening, with small loss to address leaf without affecting text, some foxing. "I have received... your letter... by which you recommend Mr Sarraire to me; I will do what depends on me to be useful to him, if the opportunity arises. I am delighted that it has given me the pleasure of hearing from you..." This may have been the future colonel Jean-François Auguste Sarraire (1772-1810), who served in the Army of Italy from 1798 to 1800. ONCLE OF NAPOLEON I, CARDINAL JOSEPH FESCH (1763-1839) played an eminent role in NAPOLEON's affairs, negotiating the Pope's arrival for the coronation, but always maintained a certain freedom from the regime. A refugee in Rome after the fall of the Empire, he provided services to the exile on St. Helena, arranging with Letizia Bonaparte to send him a doctor and chaplain. JOSEPHINE'S GREAT FRIEND, FORTUNEE HAMELIN (1776-1851) was a Creole like JOSEPHINE. Born Jeanne-Geneviève Lormier-Lagrave in Saint-Domingue, she met the great figures of the Revolution in her mother's Parisian salon, where she shone with her beautiful spirit. She married army general Romain Hamelin, and followed him to Italy during Bonaparte's campaign: it was there that they became linked with Joséphine.
