BONAPARTE (LOUIS). - Lot 42
BONAPARTE (LOUIS). Autograph letter signed to the writer Jacques Lablée. S.l., "ce 14 floréal 11 h." [year VI - May 3, 1798]. 2 pp. in-4, address on spine, splits at folds, one large one restored to address leaf, some foxing. BEAUTIFUL LETTER WRITTEN BEFORE HIS DEPARTURE FOR THE EXPEDITION TO EGYPT. "I SOUGHT YOU IN VAIN AT THE COMEDIE. HAPPIER THAN ME, YOU ARE NOT REDUCED TO BEING BORED AT WORK & YAWNING AT THE THEATER. Yet I am angry with the beautiful ladies who have held you back. I would have liked to say goodbye. I went to bed counting that you wouldn't leave so early tomorrow morning... IF YOU COULD HELP ME BETTER SUPPORT THE BORING AND ISOLATION OF SUCH A BIG CITY AS LYON, you would please me. Leave me a pretext, an opportunity to make the acquaintance of the beautiful Chalonnoises who interest you. I'm counting on you. As soon as you leave, it's not too gallant. But it's all the same and a little more indulgence on your part will equal everything. I wish you a safe journey. Hope to see you soon in Toulon. Best wishes to citizens Lucotte & Sucy [the future general Edme-Aimé Lucotte, sent to Toulon, and the Commissaire des Guerres Simon de Sucy, ordonnateur en chef de l'armée d'Orient, also sent to Toulon]..." A GREAT FRIEND OF LOUIS BONAPARTE, JACQUES LABLEE (1751-1841) held various public positions during the Revolution. At the time of this letter, he was comptroller-general of the Midi war department, and (according to him) refused to take part in the Egyptian Expedition.
