LOUŸS (Pierre Louis, known as Pierre). Autograph letter sign - Lot 83
LOUŸS (Pierre Louis, known as Pierre). Autograph letter signed to his brother Georges Louis. [Paris], "dimanche soir" [June 20, 1909]. 4pp. in-12, preserved envelope with postmark dated Paris June 21, 1909. "...Bourgeois sends me his card and a letter from his secretary asking for an appointment at my home to obtain my literary support for a work he is interested in and which I think is detestable. It's about turning prostitutes into workers [the politician Léon Bourgeois, several times a minister, was elected president of the Alliance d'hygiène sociale in 1907]. This may be in the interests of prostitutes, but it's certainly not in the interests of working women, who work for starvation wages because there are already too many of them: so why force involuntary competitors on them? What's more, under the current regime, common prostitutes are too few, too old and too confined. This triple reason is responsible for the enormous upsurge in crimes against honest girls. It's so obvious that it's not worth proving. So I'd like to say no. Should I say "non" in French, or respond with the synonyms from Léon Bourgeois's vocabulary: "Ma sympathie vous est toute acquise. je prends bonne note. I will examine with the most benevolent interest... You can count on me. My telephone was cut off three months ago. They're going to cut off my gas tomorrow. That's fine. If it goes on like this, I'll be leaving for New Zealand in 4th class, on deck. But I'm not going to see my library dispersed, that's for sure..." Enclosed, 3 letters: the senior civil servant and lyricist Louis Amade (1977), Maxime DuCamp (1870), Ludovic Halévy (n.d., evoking his novel L'Abbé Constantin).
