BAUDELAIRE (Charles). "MrDuCamp is the only man of action in - Lot 69
BAUDELAIRE (Charles). "MrDuCamp is the only man of action in the Revue de Paris... And he has more intelligence than the whole gang..." Autograph letter signed in 2 places to Charles Barbara. S.l., July 15, 1852. One p. in-8, address on back. "My dear Barbara, I'm looking for your address, and as you forgot to give it to me, I'm obliged to leave this letter with Busquet [the poet Alfred Busquet, whom Charles Baudelaire had met in the offices of the Corsaire-Satan, then crossed paths with in Father Pinson's restaurant], who will take care of finding you. When it pleases you to go and see MrMaxime DuCamp and present him with a piece of news, you will be very well received. I don't need to tell you about the heat I put into preaching your value. I promised him the short story in the Bulletin, but I can't find it [this short story, of which there is no trace, was rejected by the Bulletin de la Société des gens de lettres]. MrDuCamp is the only man of action in the Revue de Paris. He's the only one who, despite a silly quarrel, has done me any favors. And he has more intelligence than the whole gang [Baudelaire had just published a study on Edgar Poe in March-April]... Go to Neuilly, take Avenue de Madrid, the second on the left, the 1st house on the right." Charles Barbara's first short story, "Le Billet de mille francs", would appear in the Revue de Paris of October 15, 1853. The Revue de Paris "gang" included Maxime DuCamp, Laurent-Pichat, Louis de Cormenin, Arsène Houssaye, Louis Ulbach and Théophile Gautier. Charles Baudelaire, Correspondance, Paris, Gallimard (Nrf, Pléiade), 1973, p.201.
