JAURÈS (Jean). "It is in the name of the Czar... that official murderers assassinate the Jews..." Signed autograph manuscript entitled "Agoniebarbare" (a first title, crossed out, originally read "Barbarie"). [November 1905]. 11ff. large folio, on Chambre des députés letterhead; a few blue pencil marks for printing preparations; a few ink stains. On the bloody agony of tsarist power. Powerful front-page article in his newspaper L'Humanité, November 7, 1905. The revolutionary unrest of January-October 1905 had led to the promulgation of the "Liberal Manifesto" by Tsar NicholasII, but had at the same time given rise to violence against opponents and especially against Jews: from October 18 to 20, 1905, pogroms took place in the major Ukrainian and Moldavian cities, notably Kiev and Kishinev (Chișinău). "Russian dispatches, from official and unofficial sources, announce that the horrific exploits of the black gangs are coming to an end. Is this true? In any case, dying tsarism feels the need to disarm a little the growing indignation of the civilized world. For it is its agents, its policemen and its journalists who are leading the abominable cutthroats and arsonists into battle. It is in the name of the Czar, it is to avenge him of the Revolution that official murderers are assassinating Jews, and setting fire to a house where they have locked up thousands of demonstrators demanding a popular constitution and universal suffrage... [The Czar] has only one way to escape the overwhelming responsibility for this murderous anarchy, and that is to appeal to the only force that can restore order and calm, that is to say, to the nation... If the tsar refuses true and complete amnesty any longer, if he refuses true and complete national representation any longer, it is he who becomes responsible for all the violence and savagery... There is no salvation for Russia except in the fullness of the Revolution, that is, in the convocation of a Constituent Assembly, freely and directly elected by the entire people..."
