CONCINI (Concino). Letter with autograph apostille signed, i - Lot 39
CONCINI (Concino). Letter with autograph apostille signed, in Italian, [addressed to the Grand Duke of Tuscany Ferdinand I]. Paris, November 15, 1614. Unp. in-folio. Translation: "The return here of the knight Pescsiolini offers me the opportunity to make my most humble reverence to Your Highness, and to renew to him the assurances of my most devoted obedience... [Added in his own hand:] Your Serene Highness will allow me to say that she must keep a special account of Chevalier Pesciolini, since in this Court he has served and serves and can greatly serve Your Most High Majesty...". The affair of the statue of HenriIV donated by the Grand Duke of Tuscany. Tuscan merchant and aristocrat Niccolò Venerosi Pesciolini, a former officer of Alexander Farnese, had entered the service of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, who made him a Knight of Saint-Etienne and employed him on diplomatic missions, notably in France. For example, he was in charge of transporting the statue of HenriIV that Marie de Médicis had commissioned from the Florentine sculptor Pietro Tacca in 1608, and which was finally presented to her by her uncle, Grand Duke Ferdinand I. The statue was unveiled on August 23, 1614. A favorite of Marie de Médicis, Concino Concini had married Léonora Galigaï, the queen's milk sister and confidante. Traveling with her from Italy, they aroused the distrust of Henri IV, the hostility of Louis XIII and the hatred of the people, and met a violent death in 1617. Made marquis d'Ancre, marshal of France and governor of Normandy by Marie de Médicis, Concino Concini was the object of a plot hatched in LouisXIII's entourage, and was assassinated. A few days later, Galigaï was arrested, tried for crimes of lèse-majesté and witchcraft, and executed.
