KUPKA (František). Autograph letter signed, in French, with sketch, to Blaise Cendrars. S.l., October 25, 1950. One p. in-4. "Dear Cendrars, we'd be so happy if we could have you with us for a while! But we've just had an argument because I maintain that if you're asked to come for lunch or dinner with us, then surely you won't come. And yet in your little note you promise to come; but busy as hell you'll forget. Be charitable, set a date and come, we beg you! Yours affectionately, Kupka". The painter drew an access map to his home on rue Lemaître in Puteaux, where he had been living since 1906. Blaise Cendrars and Frantisek Kupka had known each other since the First World War. They had served in the same company on the Somme front. In LaMain coupée, Blaise Cendrars remembered his friend as follows: "He was a proud soldier, calm and placid. A taciturn man. In a face slightly scabbed with smallpox, he had extraordinarily luminous, amused eyes. His forehead was wrinkled. Salt-and-pepper hair. White beard. He was tall and strong. But he wasn't old enough to be a soldier, and despite his high morale, constancy, courage and endurance, he was often ill with liver attacks and hepatic colic, which forced him to stay in bed, but never got the better of him. Kupka never called in sick, and never wanted to visit. He was evacuated and discharged for frozen feet."
