GAVARNI (Guillaume-Sulpice Chevallier). Autograph manuscript - Lot 30
GAVARNI (Guillaume-Sulpice Chevallier). Autograph manuscript. "Nuit du 10septembre 53" and undated. Approx. 115pp. in-8 on leaves and two-sheets of the same paper divided into separate folders. Preparatory research for a scientific treatise he intended to publish under the title Cahiers de recherches. They are arranged in separate chapters: "Des Arcs de courbes", "Début", "Équation du center de gravité", "Fonctions fondamentales", "Moyennes", "Pression", etc., and some of them are taken from the work of Jean-Baptiste Bélanger, who was professor of mechanics at the École des Ponts-et-Chaussées and the École Polytechnique. Gavarni had a keen interest in mathematics. Employed from an early age in an architect's office, then in a precision instrument workshop, he developed a taste for this science, and spent his whole life drawing geometric diagrams and mechanisms. It was an obsessive hobby, which he pursued assiduously, particularly during his stay in England (1847-1851), where he made friends with the mathematician and theologian William George Ward.
