DORÉ (Gustave). "The rich harvest of landscapes and impressi - Lot 27
DORÉ (Gustave). "The rich harvest of landscapes and impressions I gather there..." Autograph letter signed to a "dear friend". Kyle Island (in Kyleakin?), "North Pole Road, Scotland", August 20, 1878. 4pp. in-8, mourning border. "I am writing to you from the extreme depths of all the Scots, and if my thanks reach you so late, here is the explanation: after three days spent in London at the beginning of this month, I was bitten by a travelling fancy which for the past fortnight has had me wandering without any plan or direction in the heaths of the Highlands. I only found your kind missive the day before yesterday in Inverness... I'm sorry for all the trouble you've already caused me... I am thinking of returning; I am in such a marvellous country and blessed with weather so exceptional for Scotland and the Hebrides that I shall remain occupied with the rich harvest of landscapes and impressions I am gathering there until the Sky clouds over (then it will be for a long time, the islanders tell me...)... Talking of clouds, I see on rereading your letter that a big black one is forming over the vase affair; but on rereading it again, it seems to me that there is still a possibility of hope and that there is no accomplished refusal..." Gustave Doré worked on plaster in 1877-1878 for a monumental vase teeming with detail, "Poème de la vigne", which he presented at the Exposition universelle de Paris from May to November 1878, and had cast in bronze presented at the Salon of 1882. Joint: René Bazin (some fifteen letters and cards, 1904-1913), Michel Butor (Outresoir, 1980, illustrations by Julius Baltazar, one of 2 handwritten copies signed by author and artist, soft cardboard case), Jean Hélion (1966), Félicité Robert de LaMennais (1823), Henri de Régnier (literary critic, notably of Victor Segalen's Odes, 1926).
