Proust (Marcel). Letters to Madame Scheikévitch. Paris, Librairie des Champs-Élysées, 1928. In-8, 136 [of which the first 6 are blank]-(8 of which the last 5 are blank)pp. paperback. First edition, one of 8 numbered copies on old japon blanc (second paper after 5 copies on lilac paper). Illustrated with 2portraits, one of which is a frontispiece, and 5fac-similes, some on several leaves. A friend of Marcel Proust, Marie Scheikévitch (1883-1964): it was during the summer of 1912 in Deauville that Proust met this daughter of a Russian lawyer, divorced from Pierre Carolus-Duran (the painter's son). She was staying at the Versailles home of Mme Georges Bordeaux, née de Maupeou, whose mother had been an occasional singer at the musical soirées organized by Madeleine Lemaire, one of Madame Verdurin's models in the Recherche. Marie Scheikévitch's relationship with the editor of Le Temps led her to devote a long article to Marcel Proust, and she would later publish her correspondence with the writer (1928) and a memoir with a chapter on him (1935).
