GAULLE (Charles de). LaFrance et son armée. Paris, librairie - Lot 13
GAULLE (Charles de). LaFrance et son armée. Paris, librairie Plon (collection "Présences"), 1938. In-16, (8including first and last blank)-277-(7including 1st, 3rd and 3d last blank)pp. paperback, chagrin-backed folder and lined slipcase; later postcard in effigy of Charles de Gaulle affixed between pages72 and73. First edition, one of 29 numbered head copies on pur fil Lafuma. A military history and a meditation on France. La France et son armée can be seen as the final part of a trilogy devoted to the French army, after Le Fil de l'épée (1932) and Vers une armée de métier (1934). In it, Charles de Gaulle paints a broad picture of France's military history from Gaulish times to the First World War: he presents the major war episodes in a highly literary narrative, while analyzing questions of organization, logistics, tactics and strategy. More broadly, he offers a reflection on what France is, whose "genius, by turns negligent or terrible, is faithfully reflected in the mirror of its army". Struggle with Philippe Pétain. Originally, La France et son armée was to have been published under the title Histoire du soldat français and under Marshal Pétain's name, as he was preparing his candidacy for the Académie française in the 1920s - but the project never came to fruition in this form. The publication of the text under the title La France et son armée and under General de Gaulle's name precipitated the rupture between the two men. GAULLE (Charles de). Letter to Paul Reynaud accompanying the dispatch of a copy of LaFrance et son armée. See n°54.
