Conch (La) [The ultimate in symbolism]. - Lot 9
Conch (La) [The ultimate in symbolism]. N°1-11. [Paris], March 15, 1891-January 1892. Comprising 11 issues in-8, lxxxviiipp. in continuous pagination, in sheets under covers, all preserved in a modern soft cardboard portfolio. first edition, only 120 copies printed, this one of 100 numbered on Hollande laid paper. Advertised as a fortnightly, the magazine actually appeared once a month, and the announced no. 12 never appeared. A "specimen" was printed in small numbers as a prospectus on March 1, 1891. A very rare literary magazine. According to Jean-Paul Goujon, "La Conque is a success and holds an exceptional place in the history of what has been called the second Symbolist generation": "For a long time, Louÿs had been thinking [...] of setting up an exclusively literary review, of which he would be the director. However, La Conque was to be based on an original principle: it would be directed by Louÿs alone, and would include neither program nor guideline. In fact, it would be overseen by André Gide and Paul Valéry, but, as the latter would point out, "Louÿs, the all-powerful founder, would call to him whomever he pleased". It was therefore a closed magazine, intent on making no concessions to public or critical tastes. It represented the nec plus ultra of symbolism, since it would contain only poetry; not a single page of prose or even criticism". Alongside this "triumvirate" collaborated such authors as Léon Dierx, Judith Gautier, José-Maria de Heredia, Charles-Marie Leconte de Lisle, Maurice Maeterlinck, Stéphane Mallarmé, Jean Moréas, Charles Morice, Henri de Régnier, Algernon Charles Swinburne and Paul Verlaine. Enclosed is a letter to Maurice Martin Du Gard, with corrections to his 1924 book Impertinences, about Paul Valéry's literary beginnings, particularly in LaConque.
