Georges Braque, who had first tried his hand at copperplate engraving in the 1910s, was commissioned by Ambroise Vollard around 1930 to illustrate Hesiod's Theogony, the great classical poem depicting the pantheon of the ancient Greeks. Georges Braque produced a suite of 16eaux-fortes, of which an edition was produced in 1932, comprising 10 compositions in 50 copies and 6 additional compositions in 3 copies. However, Ambroise Vollard's death and the war meant that the work as such never saw the light of day. The project was taken up again in 1953 by Aimé Maeght, with the addition of a cover, frontispiece, entablature and cul-de-lampe, and was finally published in 1955.
