Small tear lower left Historical background: Our painting illustrates a heroic episode in the French Campaign. In 1814, as coalition troops invaded the Gâtinais region, the the chatelain of Augerville, Joseph Prévost, organized local resistance. Montfort's painting depicts the brutal clash between the Cossacks, light cavalry with spears, and the elite gendarmes of the Imperial Guard, recognizable by their high bear hats. In the foreground, the charge pushes the invaders back towards the castle moat, whose silhouette whose silhouette emerges from the smoke of battle. Antoine Alphonse MONTFORT here implements the precepts of his master, Horace VERNET (1789-1863), particularly in the execution of the intensity of the confrontation. Equally close to Théodore GÉRICAULT (1791-1824), the artists share a common love of the horse, allowing for the transcription of a spirited, profoundly Romantic.
