OFFICER'S LETTER. - MORIN (JEAN-BAPTISTE-LOUIS). |THE FUTURE - Lot 216
OFFICER'S LETTER. - MORIN (JEAN-BAPTISTE-LOUIS). |THE FUTURE GENERAL MORIN, WOUNDED AT THE ADIGE CROSSING] Autograph letter signed to his father Charles Morin in Sedan. Verona, 15 nivôse an IX [January 5, 1801]. 2 pp. 1/4 in-4, on General Dupont de L'Étang letterhead, address on spine; some soiling, tears from opening without affecting text. "I have informed you of our first successes. We have now passed the Adige and are following the course of our successes on the Brenta and Tagliamento rivers. We hope to achieve much more. GENERAL DUPONT'S CORPS HAS HAD A FAIRLY LIVELY FIGHT AND HEAVY CANNONADE IN FRONT OF VERONA. I WAS WOUNDED IN THE FIGURE; a 27 mm cannonball that fell at half range at my horse's feet knocked a piece into my head. Fortunately, it was removed. We feared for my right eye, but it seems certain that I won't lose it. I'M NOT HAPPY AT RIVER CROSSINGS... " Captain Morin, then aide-de-camp to General Dupont de L'Étang, had been wounded at the Ticino crossing in May 1800, made squadron leader, and had just been wounded again at the Adige crossing in front of Verona on January 2, 1801. He would later be made colonel of dragoons, and serve on other battlefields, including Spain, where he was riddled with sabre wounds during a dazzling action. He survived, and was made a general in March 1814, shortly before his death.
