By March 1793, the "military Vendée" was in the hands of the insurgents, and although the Republic's reaction was slow at first - the decree destroying the Vendée was issued on August 1, 1793 - the effective action of Kléber's fiery Blue Army led to major setbacks for the royalists. After their defeat at Cholet on October 13, 1793, the remnants of the Vendée army embarked on a grueling journey (known as the "Galerne swing") that took them from the Loire to Granville and back. Despite some successes, they were defeated at Angers on December 3 and 4, 1793, then crushed at Le Mans (December 11) and Savenay (December 23).
