LETTER FROM A SOLDIER. - BANCÉ (PIERRE-ANTOINE). "WE FOUGHT - Lot 211
LETTER FROM A SOLDIER. - BANCÉ (PIERRE-ANTOINE). "WE FOUGHT HARD WITH THE SPANIARDS. WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THE VICTORS..." Autograph letter signed to his father Antoine Bancé in La Ferté-en-Bray [now La Ferté-Saint-Samson in the Seine-Maritime department]. Alcañiz [in Aragon, Spain], September 14, 1809. 2 pp. 1/4 in-8, address on back, soiling. A soldier in the 1st Company of the 1st Battalion of the 114th Infantry Regiment (Colonel Jean-Pierre Arbod), Pierre-Antoine Bancé belonged to the 3rd Corps of the Spanish Army under the leadership of the future Marshal Suchet. " ... It's been several letters since I sent you without seeing any news from you, but I'll tell you that I'm not surprised because many letters have been stopped. I have the honor of telling you that we fought hard with the Spaniards. We have always been the victors, thank God. Here are several prisoners, not to mention the wounded and dead, and thirty-two flags and several altilleries. I can tell you that we've put them through an extraordinary rout, but I hope it will end soon...". The soldier Bancé is no doubt alluding to Marshal Suchet's victories over General Joaquín Blake's Spanish army, won near Saragossa at MARIA DE HUERVA and then at BELCHITE (June 15 and 18, 1809).
