[THE ATTACK ON PETIT-SAINT-BERNARD, AND THE TAKING OF MONT-CENIS] Autograph letter signed to his father Joseph Aubertin in Flavigny-sur-Ozerain in the Côte-d'Or department. Bousson [in the upper Val de Suse, Italy, near the Montgenèvre pass], 12 prairial an II [May 31, 1794]. 3 pp. in-4, address on spine with vestige of red wax seal, postal mark "Briançon"; soiling, marginal tear without damage to text. A grenadier in the 6th Battalion of the Côte-d'Or, Private Aubertin was then serving in the Army of the Alps under the command of GENERAL DUMAS (FATHER OF THE ROMANCIER), who was leading a reverse action against the Sardinians and their Austrian allies threatening southeastern France. Here he recounts the attack on Petit-Saint-Bernard (April 24-25, 1794), the capture of Mont-Cenis and Petit-Mont-Cenis (May 13-14, 1794). " ... You will know that we were ataque[r] the St-Bernard on 5 floréal [April 24] at 10 o'clock in the evening. We were on the march for the attack, we were in 3 columns, we were the center column. The attack was very fierce, and we took 20 cannons and 800 prisoners of war from the enemy. We climbed some very high and difficult mountains, and held the fort for 6 days. We sent 30 men per company to the Morienne army to attack Monceny. We attacked it on the 24th of Floréal [May 13], climbing the mountain at 9 o'clock in the evening. On the 25th it was pry. We gave the enemy 5,000 prisoners and 60 cannon, and 600 deserter prisoners who surrendered their weapons at Petit-Monceny. We've given them 12 companies of grennadiers, 64 men each. All the garçont du pay are doing well, except for Glaude Guiot, who was always sick in hospital...".
