MURAT (FAMILY). [WISHES TO THE EMPEROR FROM THE MURAT CHILDR - Lot 163
MURAT (FAMILY). [WISHES TO THE EMPEROR FROM THE MURAT CHILDREN WRITTEN AT THE END OF THE RUSSIAN CAMPAIGN ] 3 autograph letters signed TO NAPOLEON I. 1812. - ACHILLE. Autograph letter signed "Napoleon Achille". Naples, November 27, 1812. "Sire, there is not a day when I do not make wishes for everything that can contribute to Your Majesty's happiness, and I rejoice to see a time coming when I am allowed to offer them. I beg Your Majesty to accept my homage, along with that of my gratitude for all his kindnesses. Please, Sire, continue them for me: my greatest desire is to make myself worthy of them. I would like to be, like Daddy, able to give Your Majesty proof of my devotion. I am with profound respect, Sire, Your Majesty's most humble and obedient servant and submissive nephew...". (2 pp. in-4). Achille Murat (1801-1847), Joachim's eldest son, settled in the United States, married a grandniece of George Washington, and twice returned to Europe without finding the destiny he had hoped for. - LETIZIA. Autograph letter signed "Napoleon". [Probably Naples, November 27, 1812]. "Sire, Maman allows me to offer Your Majesty my wishes for the beginning of this year. I beg Your Majesty to continue his kindnesses to me and to believe that I will make every effort to make myself worthy of them. Every morning I pray to God for Your Majesty and the King of Rome, I kiss my dear uncle's hands and embrace him tenderly and respectfully...". The author of this letter was most probably Letizia Murat, then aged 10, rather than her sister Louise, then aged just 7, neither of whom had "Napoleon" among her first names. Letizia Murat (1802-1859) would marry Marquis Pepoli. - LUCIEN. Autograph letter signed "Napoleon Lucien". Naples, November 27, 1812. "Sire, I flatter myself that Papa has been kind enough to speak to you from time to time about me and the desire I have to deserve Your Majesty's kindnesses. Please grant them to me, Sire, and accept the homage of the wishes I make every day for you. If they are fulfilled, nothing will ever be lacking to Your Majesty's happiness. I am with deepest respect, Sire, of Your Majesty, the most humble and most obedient servant and submissive nephew..." (2 pp. in-4). Lucien Murat (1803-1878), the third child of Joachim Murat, bore the title of Prince of Ponte-Corvo and married a Scottish aristocrat. He led a hard life in the United States before returning to France in 1848, where he pursued a political career as a deputy and, under the Second Empire, as a senator. For a time, he was Grand Master of the Grand Orient de France.
