MURAT (JOACHIM). "THE EMPEROR'S VICTORIES... HAVE PRODUCED T - Lot 146
MURAT (JOACHIM). "THE EMPEROR'S VICTORIES... HAVE PRODUCED THE GREATEST ENTHUSIASM HERE". Autograph letter signed as King of Naples, [addressed to Jean-Jacques-Régis Cambacérès]. Naples, May 12, 1809. One p. in-4. The Grande Armée won several decisive victories against the Austrians, opening the road to Vienna: Abensberg (April 20), Landshut (April 21), Eckmühl (April 22), Regensburg (April 23). "My cousin, I have received the letter that my Minister of the General Police gave me from Your Most Serene Highness. I thank you for having informed me of the Emperor's victories through your letters to the Queen. Although I was already aware of them, I was no less sensitive to your kind attention. They have produced the greatest anthusiasm here, and destroyed the bad impressions and fears that the news from Italy had given us. We are quiet now, and I'M WAITING FOR MY TURN, BEING WELL PREPARED TO WELCOME ANYONE WHO WANTS TO VISIT ME. The Queen and my children are well. Yours sincerely. Your affectionate cousin..." In fact, the Kingdom of Naples was the object of an opportunistic invasion attempt by the English under General John Stuart, who wished to take advantage of the fact that the Grande Armée was busy fighting the Austrians.
