Amaranth and burr wood marquetry desk, - Lot 349
Amaranth and burr wood marquetry desk, opening to three drawers, the central drawer originally compartmentalized with a shelf, decorated with palmettes, culottes and rosettes, with a gouache under glass incorporated into the top decorated with Amphitrite (probably associated), resting on scrolled console legs terminating in carved elm claws; (restorations). Attributed to Louis Alexandre Bellangé (1797-1861). Charles X period. H: 73 cm, W: 122 cm, D: 67 cm Provenance : -Former Roger Imbert gallery, Paris, -Collection Comte et Comtesse Charles-André Colonna Walewski Bibliography: S. Cordier, Bellangé, ébénistes, une histoire du goût au XIXe siècle, Paris, 2012, p.518. An album of drawings considered to be from the Bellangé workshop, known as the Recueil Bellangé, now in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, includes, among many depictions of furniture and seating, a drawing very similar to the desk in the Walewski collection. The drawing describes a number of features of this piece of furniture very well: an absolutely identical structure, with pedestals resting on scrolls extending into the volute of the leg, terminated by claws; the design of the marquetry, however, differs in its detail. The extremely precise and finished character of the marquetry points to a set of presentation drawings intended for the clientele of Pierre Antoine and Louis Antoine Bellangé.
