Cover of the sale catalog. -Colonna-Walewski Collection, Geneva. Exhibition : Alfred, George, Victor... and the others. A constellation of Romantic artists in the Centre region. Exhibition in Blois (41) by Sylvain Ledda. December 16, 2010 to May 15, 2011 Bibliographical reference: S. Cordier, Pierre-Gaston Brion, menuisier et sculpteur sur bois, L'Estampille-L'Objet d'art, June 2005, p. 40-51. A marquise belonging to the same furniture, also attributed to Pierre Gaston Brion, was sold in Paris, Sotheby's, on April 29, 2020, lot 9. Pierre-Gaston Brion must be considered above all as a sculptor of great exuberance, working in particular for the Garde-meuble impérial and the Maison du roi under the Restoration. The commissions he received abroad seem to further demonstrate his talent for sculpture. Around 1820, he delivered a fine set of furniture for Grand Duke Constantine, brother of Alexander I of Russia, for the Belvedere Palace in Warsaw; this ensemble is now housed between the Belvedere Palace and the National Museum in Warsaw. The armchairs bear a number of similarities to the chairs in the Walewski collection, notably in the decoration, with its ubiquitous use of palmette motifs, but above all in the structure, with scrolled armrests that are also very wide. Brion's masterpiece, however, is the bed for King Charles X at the Tuileries, delivered in 1825 and now in the Louvre; it features the same leafy constriction motif at the top of the anterior uprights as the front legs of our chairs and armchairs.
