Small medallion of the King of Rome - Lot 333
Small medallion of the King of Rome early 19th-century Sèvres porcelain cookie; in a blackened wood frame with gilded metal border Intaglio mark A.B. for Alexandre Brachard In the Wedgwood style, depicting the left profile of the King of Rome against a pale blue background, the frame broken and reattached D. of cookie medallion : 4.5 cm. Total diameter: 8 cm. Provenance: - Galerie Talabardon et Gautier. - Collection Comte et Comtesse Charles-André Colonna Walewski The model was created around 1811. Unfortunately, the archives of the Manufacture de Sèvres do not preserve any tangible evidence as to its designer, although it can be attributed without too much hesitation to Jean-Bertrand Andrieu (1761-1822). Andrieu, a sculptor specializing in medals, was one of the great engravers of the First Empire; to mark the birth of the King of Rome, he produced a medal in several materials (bronze, gold, silver), based on designs by Dominique Vivant-Denon; this medal, signed Andrieu and dated March 20, 1811, features the double portrait of the Emperor and Empress Marie-Louise on the front, and that of the King of Rome on the reverse. Andrieu almost certainly used this medal for this porcelain medallion, unless an artist at the Manufacture simply drew inspiration directly from the original version. Alexandre Brachard (1775-1843): Listed as a repareur sculptor at the Manufacture de Sèvres, he joined as a pupil in 1784 and worked there until 1826, the year of his retirement, with a few periods of interruption. Between May 1811 and April 1812, the Manufacture's sales registers contain numerous examples of this medallion (around 367); they are described as "medallions camés" or "découpés du Roy de Rome" and were sold for 1.50 francs when unmounted. Buyers included Alexandre Brachard, Thomire et Cie (1811), Weydinger, Mme Ducret and M Charpentier (1812). See Lechevallier-Chevignard and Savreux, Le cookie de Sèvres sous le Consulat et l'Empire, Paris, 1923, pl.6, for another medallion model, probably in plaster, in the collections of the Musée national de Sèvres. A similar model was sold by Me Cornette de Saint-Cyr, Paris, on November 5, 1993, lot 91 (part of a set). Temporary import The buyer must pay import duties of 5.5% in addition to the hammer price, unless the item is immediately re-exported outside the European Union. Work in temporary import The buyer will have to pay import fees of 5.5% in addition to the hammer price, unless the buyer immediately re-exports the lot outside the European Union.
