S.A.I. L'Imperatrice marie-louise Cavelier (A.-L.) and A. Pi - Lot 332
S.A.I. L'Imperatrice marie-louise Cavelier (A.-L.) and A. Pierron. Description of the toilette presented to Her Majesty the Empress Queen, and of the cradle offered to H. M. the King of Rome, by M. le conseiller d'État comte Frochot, préfet du département de la Seine, and by the Corps municipal, on behalf of the City of Paris. Composed by Prudhon, executed on his drawings by Messrs. Thomire and Odiot, modeled by Roguet. Paris, De l'Imprimerie de Ballard, 1811, large in-4, first cover in place of title, 2 pp. 5 plates, leaves in printed blue paper cover. Only edition Provenance : Charles-André Colonna Walewski Count and Countess Collection The five plates, finely line-engraved by Cavelier and Pierron after drawings by Pierre-Paul Prud'hon, bring together several items of imperial furniture. The first pieces - a fireplace screen, a dressing table with mirror, an armchair and a washbasin - were executed in vermeil with lapis inlays and presented to Empress Marie-Louise on August 15, 1810. This important achievement was the joint work of the foundry-cutter Thomire, awarded a gold medal at the 1806 Exhibition, and the goldsmith Odiot. The three plates dedicated to this piece are a reminder of this, as it was largely cast in 1832. The last two plates concern the famous cradle of the King of Rome, in mother-of-pearl vermeil and burgau - the work of the same two sculptors - which was presented on March 5, 1811 by the City of Paris prior to the arrival of the imperial child, and which is now kept in Vienna. Thomire alone delivered a second one in elm burl and gilded bronze, using the same form and repeating certain parts identically, such as the two bas-reliefs of the Seine and Tiber rivers. This second cot is now in the Château Fontainebleau. The cover indicates that there were copies on ordinary paper, copies on Hollande wove paper, and washed and colored copies. Temporary importation The buyer will have to pay import duties, i.e. 5.5% in addition to the hammer price, unless the item is immediately re-exported outside the European Union.
