French school of the 19th century - Lot 326
French school of the 19th century Napoleon I as King of Italy Bronze statuette with brown patina H. 59 cm Provenance : -Count and Countess Charles-André Colonna Walewski Collection Related literature: -Gérard Hubert, La sculpture dans l'Italie napoléonienne, Paris, Edition E. de Boccard, 1964 ; -Gérard Hubert, Napoléon portraits contemporains, bustes et statues, Paris, Arthena, 1999. Rare representation of Napoleon as King of Italy. This bronze statuette, of which no other examples have been found, appears to be unique. The Emperor is shown full-length, draped in antique style over his uniform. He is leaning on a lictor beam, a symbol of justice and legitimate authority in ancient Rome. His left hand is missing an attribute, probably a scepter. From 1805 onwards, various monumental statues to be erected in Italy were the subject of competitions. Our statuette may be one of these projects, never completed. Temporary import The buyer will be required to pay import duties, i.e. 5.5% in addition to the hammer price, unless the item is immediately re-exported outside the European Union. Work in temporary import The buyer will have to pay import fees of 5.5% in addition to the hammer price, unless the buyer immediately re-exports the lot outside the European Union.
