D. 18 cm, D. with original frame: 23.5 cm. Provenance : Charles-André Colonna Walewski Count and Countess Collection On a tapestry label on the reverse: "Portrait in tin-glazed earthenware (sic) (probably from the Sarreguemines region) of General Bonaparte after his victorious Italian campaign, in 1797, on behalf of the Directoire. Lorraine, along with Sarreguemines, had been the duchy abandoned by Stanislas LESZCZYNSKI to France in 1766, while the Archbishopric of Trêve had been annexed by Jourdan in 1794, on behalf of the Convention. This portrait was presented in 1797 by General LEVASSEUR to Wilhelm DERSCHEID, appointed by Bonaparte as Inspecteur Général des eaux et Forêt du département de Rhin et Moselle, and resident in Trêve. Wilhelm DERSCHEID's grandson Charles began his career at the Boch pottery works in Saarland (see Metlach). When a branch of the Boch family moved to La Louvière, he managed a new factory there (see also artist Anna Boch).
