M.M.40.47.7102. Biography: Born in Florence in 1791, Luigi Pampaloni was a Florentine neoclassical sculptor. A student of the renowned Lorenzo Bartolini at the Academia di Belle Arti in Carrara, where he settled in 1810, he maintained close ties with the Bonaparte family, with several major commissions for official portraits and funerary monuments between the decades of 1810 and 1840. He first created small alabaster busts of Napoleon around 1810, then executed bas-reliefs for the decor of the Palazzo Pitti at the request of Elisa Baciocchi, Grand Duchess of Tuscany. Before sculpting the tomb of Lucien Bonaparte, who died in 1840 and is buried in Canino, and the funeral monument of Julie Clary, wife of Napoleon's elder brother Joseph Bonaparte, who died in Florence in 1845, in the Bonaparte chapel of the Santa Croce basilica, where the tomb of his daughter Charlotte Napoleone Bonaparte, designed by Lorenzo Bartolini in 1840, had already been erected, Pampaloni created a bust portrait of Napoleon-Louis Bonaparte around 1826. This portrait may have been commissioned for the marriage of the son of Louis Bonaparte and Hortense de Beauharnais to his aforementioned cousin Charlotte Napoléone. Our copy is the second listed, along with the one in the Château de Malmaison and Bois Préau (n°inv. M.M.40.47.7102).
