Henri Auguste (1759 - 1816), Goldsmith - Lot 310
Henri Auguste (1759 - 1816), Goldsmith The tea service of Queen Hortense of Holland. Pen drawing, watercolor. Circular red stamp, numbered 25, lower right and referenced in the Maison Odiot model inventory. 35 x 40 cm Coaster, modern frame Provenance : Count and Countess Charles-André Colonna Walewski Collection These pieces belong to the tea service delivered to Queen Hortense in 1808 by the silversmith Henry Auguste. The five pieces are graduated in size, and in the center can be identified: - The gilded silver tea fountain, commissioned by Queen Hortense from Auguste and now kept in the collections of Her Imperial Highness, Princess Napoleon, at the Château de Prangins. - A ewer - A teapot - A cup and its display stand - A cream jug, shown in the archives of the ornemaniste Moitte. This tea fountain testifies to the virtuosity of Parisian silversmiths, who, with Henry Auguste and then Jean-Baptiste Claude Odiot, achieved prodigies of ingenuity and refinement in the art of enlivening the tables of the Princes of Europe. In 1810, Odiot acquired Auguste's workshop along with a number of his drawings, including one for a wine cooler in the City of Paris banqueting service, attributed to Moitte and bearing Odiot's collection mark, now in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Bibliography: Connaissance des Arts, hors-série Grands artisans d'autrefois, "Les grands orfèvres de Louis XIII à Charles X", Paris, 1965, pp. 272-273.
