Jean-Baptiste Verzy, based on - Lot 306
Jean-Baptiste Verzy, based on Fame hovering over the world Color engraving at full margins. Gilded wood frame with palmettes. First Empire period 63 x 75 cm. Provenance : Charles-André Colonna Walewski Count and Countess Collection History: Conceived as an allegorical manifesto of the young Empire, this large dotted color engraving presents the figure of Renommée as the megaphone of a nation united behind Napoleon. She crosses a boundless sky, her trumpet transformed into a gilded bouquet of twelve medallion heads (soldier, magistrate, craftsman, even Mameluke), whose diversity foreshadows the twelve eulogies engraved below. The dedication "to the French People" surmounts an imperial eagle framed by laurels, while two columns of cursive orations list the benefits (military glory, social peace, renewal of industry, protection of the arts) that each social group attributes to Napoleon's genius. The voices rise like a choir, the multiple bell of the trumpet literally materializing their collective acclamation. Biography : Jean-Baptiste VERZY, whose signature appears as "J. B. Verzy del.", appears to have worked in Paris for several decades, exhibiting at the Salon from 1793 to 1796, from the Revolution to the early years of the Restoration. His known output consists almost exclusively of stippled or dotted-line engravings celebrating contemporary political events: sovereign encounters, victories, royal entries, as well as ingenious folding prints that can be reconfigured to reveal hidden portraits.
