Rare pair of stools - Lot 304
Rare pair of stools in painted and gilded beechwood, curule-shaped, decorated with ram heads, discs and rosettes, resting on x-shaped legs terminating in claw feet, with three early 19th-century labels inscribed for two of them: "Paris / P / N° (...) un tabouret X / rechampi en blanc et doré / satin broché jaune / 1° housse taffetas jaune / 2° (...)" and for the other: "Partie de 4 pareil", with the recessed mark BEP (crowned) for British Embassy Paris. Empire period, circa 1804. H: 57 cm, W: 76 cm, D: 45 cm Provenance: - Pauline Borghese in her hotel on rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in the early 19th century, - Former Galerie Roger Imbert (Paris), late 1970s. - Count and Countess Charles-André Colonna Walewski Collection Bibliographical reference : J. N. Ronfort and J.-D. Augarde, A l'ombre de Pauline, la résidence de l'ambassadeur de Grande-Bretagne à Paris, Paris, 2001. Pauline Borghese, sister of the Emperor, bought the Hôtel de Charost, now the British Embassy on rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, in November 1803. Four X-shaped stools were described in the ground-floor yellow salon (now the red salon), two of which are still in the Hôtel Borghèse, while the other two, belonging to the Walewski collection, are shown here. The salon jaune, also known as the salon de réception, was upholstered in yellow gros de Tours, the four X-shaped stools were complemented by four large armchairs, two small armchairs, four chairs, two tête-à-tête, two foot stools and two sofas, all "rechampis en blanc et doré" and upholstered in yellow saton. It was the two labels preserved on each of the stools in the Walewski collection that made it possible to identify the embassy stools, and their analysis also shows that the current state of the decor is perfectly in keeping with the old description; painted and gilded (unlike the embassy stools, which were entirely gilded), they also give us a precious detail concerning the customs of the period. We learn that the stools came with two sets of covers, one in yellow taffeta.
