Biographies : Jean LANNES, (1769-1809), first duc de Montebello, French general elevated to the dignity of maréchal d'Empire in 1804 and buried in the Panthéon in 1810. He volunteered for service in 1792, first on the Pyrenean front, then in the Army of Italy, where, as a brigadier general, he came to Bonaparte's attention at the battle of the Pont d'Arcole. He then took part in the Egyptian campaign and was promoted to the rank of division general. During the second Italian campaign (1799-1800), he led the vanguard of the French army. His greatest success came at the battle of Montebello, on June 9, 1800. His intelligence and fighting ability were confirmed at the battle of Marengo five days later. He then became Minister Plenipotentiary to Portugal, where he clashed with British and Portuguese diplomats. In 1804, Emperor Napoleon I elevated him to the rank of marshal d'Empire and gave him command of the fifth corps of the Ocean Coast army. He took part in the German campaign, which ended at Austerlitz (December 1805). Having left the army when the Third Coalition was dissolved, he was recalled by Emperor Napoleon I when Prussia declared war on France, and followed the Emperor on his Prussian and Polish campaigns: after the battle of Jena (October 1806), he was tasked with pursuing Bennigsen's Russian army, which he crushed at the battle of Pultusk. He took part in the Battle of Friedland, where he again fought outnumbered. On June 15, 1808, he was made Duke of Montebello and sent to Spain, where he won the battle of Tudela, then led the second siege of Saragossa. In 1809, he took part in the second Austrian campaign, during which Vienna was once again taken by the French. But on May 22, 1809, during the battle of Essling, Marshal Lannes was hit by a cannonball that seriously wounded him. He died on May 31, 1809, aged 40. Napoleon said on St. Helena: "Lannes, the bravest of all men (...) was certainly one of the men in the world on whom I could most rely (...) Lannes' spirit had grown to the level of his courage, he had become a giant (...)". Georges-Louis-Charles DAGUILHON-PUJOL, (1855-1905), doctor of law and lawyer at the Paris Court of Appeal, Paris city councillor and general councillor for the Seine. Charles OUDIN, who signed his watches "Charles", was a pupil of Breguet, the famous "luxury and precision watchmaking" firm, one of the oldest in France, founded at the end of the 17th century.
