THE ORDER OF SAINT MAURICE AND LAZARE AND VICTOR EMMANUEL II In 1572, Duke Emmanuel-Philibert of Savoy obtained from Pope Gregory XIII the union of two distinct Orders under his mastery: that of Saint Lazarus, a hospitable Order founded in Jerusalem during the Crusades, and that of Saint Maurice, a knightly militia created by Duke Amédée VIII of Savoy in 1434 and placed under the protection of the patron saint of the House of Savoy. A dynastic order, it was reorganized several times over the course of the 19th century, becoming the first state order in unified Italy, after that of the Annunciation.
