Provenance : -King Louis BONAPARTE -Prince Victor NAPOLEON Collection n°1718 -Prince Louis NAPOLEON Collection -Charles BONAPARTE, Princess Catherine NAPOLEON and Princess Laure NAPOLEON -Acquired by Countess Viviane de WITT. History: In June 1805, Napoleon founded the Order of the Iron Crown in Milan, the equivalent of the Legion of Honor for the Kingdom of Italy. The order evokes the illustrious memory of the crown of the Lombard kings, reputed to have been forged with one of Christ's Passion nails. The plaque features most of the insignia's constituent elements (imperial eagle, antique crown and motto), in an elegant arrangement centered on the effigy of the Emperor and King. Made entirely of silver, this plate still imitates the look of embroidered plates. It also features eyelets at the ends of the spokes, for sewing to the garment. This plate is therefore a very fine and rare example of an Iron Crown metal plate produced in the last years of the Empire. According to the typed inventory book of the Prince Victor Napoleon collection, n°1718 is described as follows: Plaque de l'Ordre de la COURONNE de FER en argent et émail, center en or - 2ème modèle - Belonged to Roi Louis (Provenance: S.M. l'Impératrice EUGENIE) Biography: LE ROI LOUIS BONAPARTE (1778-1846) Louis Bonaparte, younger brother of Napoleon I, distinguished himself in the army, rising quickly from aide-de-camp to captain and then brigadier general. In 1802, he married Hortense de Beauharnais, Josephine's daughter, and four years later became King of Holland. He abdicated in 1810 and lived in exile as Comte de Saint-Leu. He was the father of the future Napoleon III. When the Empire was established, Louis became Grand Constable of France. He was promoted to Grand Eagle of the Legion of Honor in 1805.
