History: Founded in 1701 by Frederick III, on the occasion of his elevation to royal dignity, the Order of the Black Eagle was the first noble order of the House of Hohenzollern. Its emblem, the black eagle, is that of Prussia, while the orange color of the ribbon is said to be the founder's tribute to his mother Louise Henriette d'Orange-Nassau. Napoleon sent the Grand Eagle of the Legion of Honor to the King of Prussia early on (March 21, 1805), and on April 7, 1805, he received the Black Eagle and Red Eagle in return. Numerous French dignitaries were admitted to these orders on this occasion, including Murat, Cambacérès, Berthier, Talleyrand, Bernadotte and Duroc. Of the Emperor's brothers, only Princes Louis and Jérôme received the Prussian orders. Prince Napoleon-Louis (1804-1831) received it at the same time as his father.
