LE CARDINAL JOSEPH FESCH (1763-1839) Joseph Fesch (1763-1839), maternal uncle of Napoleon Bonaparte, was ordained a priest in 1785. After intervening in the Concordat, he was appointed archbishop of Lyon in 1802, cardinal in 1803 and ambassador to Rome. In this capacity, he took part in negotiations to bring Pope Pius VII to Paris for the coronation. Appointed the Emperor's Grand Chaplain in 1805, he remained loyal to the prelate in his battle with Napoleon I, refusing the archbishopric of Paris. It was to the Sovereign Pontiff that he took refuge in Rome in 1814, where he ended his life, surrounded by his remarkable art collection, bequeathed to the town of Ajaccio.
