According to the typed inventory book of the Prince Victor Napoléon collection, n°4305 is described as follows: Gold watch by Bréguet in Paris - enamel case with royal blue background. Subject: woman in white dress leaning on a column shaft with a child and a dog - white enamel case with blue lace - Louis XVI period. Belonged to the Queen of Sardinia MARIE-ADELAIDE History: Emanating from the spring watches of the 15th century, the pocket watch became very fashionable in the 16th century. The first watches had only hour hands, with minute hands arriving a few centuries later. Until 1720, the vast majority of watch movements were angle escapements. In 1675, a completely new fashion trend emerged: watches were no longer worn with chains around the neck, but in pockets or attached to clothing with chains or ribbons. It was Charles II of England who pioneered this style when he began wearing watches in his pocket. There are many Swiss-made watches bearing the signature "Bréguet A Paris" which, according to Bréguet itself, is completely apocryphal, illustrating the success of the firm at the time. Very often, they feature pastorals, in the neo-classical taste of the late reign of Louis XVI. Biography Marie Adélaïde Clotilde Xavière de France, (1759-1802), Queen of Sardinia, known as "Madame Clotilde". Daughter of Dauphin Louis-Ferdinand and Marie-Josèphe de Saxe, and granddaughter of Louis XV, sister of French kings Louis XVI, Louis XVIII and Charles X. In 1775, she married the future King of Sardinia, Charles-Emmanuel IV of Savoy (1751-1819), and became Queen of Sardinia in 1796. A woman of great piety, she was declared Venerable of the Catholic Church in 1808.
