Auguste de LEUCHTENBERG, (1810-1835), Presumed portrait. Large marble bust, wearing a Roman-style tunic covering only one shoulder, resting on a plaster column in imitation of yellow Sienna marble. B.E. 19th century. 44 x 27 x Height. 71 cm. Provenance : Countess Viviane de WITT family collection. Biography: PRINCE AUGUSTE DE LEUCHTENBERG (1810-1835) Auguste de Leuchtenberg was the third child of Eugène de Beauharnais and Princess Auguste de Bavière, daughter of King Maximilien of Bavaria. His father, the imperial Prince Eugène, held the title of Viceroy of Italy. In 1814, the family was forced to leave Italy and settle in Muniwch with the King of Bavaria. The latter appointed his son-in-law, Eugène, Duke of Leuchtenberg and Prince of Eichstädt, with the predicate of Royal Highness for himself and Serene Highness for his descendants. In 1824, his father, Prince Eugène, died, making him head of the family at just 14 years of age. In 1829, his younger sister Amelie married Emperor Pedro I of Brazil, father of Queen Maria II of Portugal and Algarve. The 24-year-old Duke of Leuchtenberg married the sovereign. August became Duke of Santa Cruz and Prince of Portugal. The union was short-lived, as August died two months after his marriage.
