William CAPON (1757-1827), after Vigée Le BRUN - Lot 440
William CAPON (1757-1827), after Vigée Le BRUN Portrait of Queen Marie-Antoinette, Queen of France (1755-1793) Sanguine on paper Restoration period 32.5 x 26.5 cm Signed upper right Paper slightly yellowed at bottom William Capon (1757-1827) was a British architect, draughtsman and set designer, renowned for his accurate views of old buildings and Gothic interiors. Specializing in architectural restitution, he worked both for the theater - as a set designer - and on restoration projects, particularly in London. His work bears witness to a great concern for historical detail. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1795 and 1822, where he presented mainly architectural drawings. Much of his work is now held by the British Museum, the Society of Antiquaries of London and the Guildhall Library. His drawings are a valuable resource for the study of English architecture that has disappeared or been transformed.
