JOACHIM MURAT - Lot 161
JOACHIM MURAT King of Naples (1767-1815) Paris, Manufacture de Darte Porcelain service set decorated in gold on a red background with the monogram JM for Joachim Murat in the center of the plates in a medallion and with rosettes, palmettes and fleurons, comprising six plates, four covered juice jars and a covered oval sugar bowl supported by two gold-backed sphinxes on an oval base resting on six fluted feet, the griffin-shaped lid. Marked : DARTE FRERE A PARIS. Consulate period. D. of plates: 23.5 cm. H. of juice jars: 8.5 cm. Height of sugar bowl: 23 cm. Restoration to the lid of the sugar bowl, the handle of a juice jug restored. Provenance: Joachim Murat Joachim Murat (1767-1815), Marshal of the Empire and French Prince, Grand Admiral of the Empire, Grand Duke of Berg, then King of Naples This antique-style service with a Pompeian red background was inspired by the records of archaeological excavations in Italy, which were very much in vogue at the dawn of the 19th century. Another very similar service, also in Darte porcelain, was presented by Napoleon to his brother Jérôme on the occasion of his marriage to Catherine de Wurtemberg. The Olympic service in Sèvres porcelain, made for the Emperor and presented to Tsar Alexander I, uses the same codes: the wing with a Pompeian red background, winged sphinxes supporting cups and antique motifs. Bernard Chevallier has pointed out that this service, bearing the Joachim Murat cipher, was most probably commissioned for his 1802 religious marriage to Caroline Bonaparte, sister of Napoleon, then 1st Consul (Revue des Amis du musée Murat, n° 54 , 2023). Part of this service is on display at the Swan House, Atlanta History Center, Atlanta, Georgia, in the collection of Philip Trammell Schutze. See Rebecca B. More, "Philip Trammell Shutze: Atlanta Classicist, Connoisseur, and Collector", The Atlanta History Center, 2005. Another piece from the collection of Mrs. Elizabeth Lyon Kite was recently sold by Ahlers Ogletree Inc. Atlanta, January 16, 2022, lot 762.
