Emmanuel de Pastoret (1756-1840) was a jurist-historian and academician, elected to the Académie française in 1820, then Chancellor of France and President of the Chamber of Peers in 1829-1830. Pastoret evokes Bishop Massillon in his acceptance speech to the Académie in 1820 as a model of moral and civic eloquence in support of social order and education: "Massillon knew how to speak to the heart rather than to pride; he brought the Christian word down to human weakness to raise it up to virtue."
