MICHEL DUROC Duke of Frioul (1772-1813) - Lot 151
MICHEL DUROC Duke of Frioul (1772-1813) Sèvres Soup plate with tortoiseshell background, gold frieze and crowned N numeral delivered for the Grand Maréchal's table at the Palais in Compiègne, decorated in gold on a tortoiseshell background with a frieze of flowers in the form of a crosier and a frieze of posts on the wing and a garland of myrtle on the fall, the center decorated with two laurel palms joined by a knotted ribbon and originally framing the N numeral of Emperor Napoleon. Marked: de Sèvres 8 stamped in red, the words M. Imple ground at the Restoration, trace of interlaced LL, fleur-de-lis, Sèvres stamped in blue ground, gold mark G.a. Empire period, 1808. D. 23.6 cm Minor gold wear, a small chip on the heel. Provenance : Géraud Christophe Michel du Roc dit Duroc, duc de Frioul (1772-1813) for the Palais de Compiègne This plate comes from the service ordered on February 15, 1808 by the Emperor's household and delivered on April 3, 1809 to the Palais de Compiègne for the Grand Marshal's table. This service included 36 soup plates, 8 navette butter dishes, 4 salad bowls and 16 juice jars (Arch. Sèvres, Vbb2, f° 93 and Vy18, f° 77). The second most important service in the residence after that reserved for the Emperor's table, this service delivered for General Duroc was completed by a dessert service with a pink background and enriched lozenges. The deletion of the Emperor's numeral N from the center of the latter's plate testifies to the continued use of these plates after the fall of the regime. Two soup plates from this service have recently been added to the Château de Compiègne collection.
