Under the July Monarchy (1830-1848), Louis-Philippe perpetuated the ancient practice of giving precious objects, including snuffboxes, as diplomatic gifts or honorary distinctions. Presented to deserving officers, foreign diplomats or loyal servants of the State, these snuffboxes symbolized royal recognition while embodying French elegance. Their value lies as much in the richness of the materials used as in the symbolic power of the royal cipher. Active in Paris in the first half of the 19th century, Martial Bernard was a renowned silversmith whose activity is attested between 1820 and 1850. He was noted for the high quality of his workmanship on luxury items, in particular snuffboxes, precious boxes and kits, often made of gold or noble materials and destined for aristocratic or royal clients. Based in Paris, Bernard benefits from know-how handed down from the great craft traditions of the imperial and restored eras. His creations are characterized by an ornamental refinement typical of the taste of the July Monarchy, combining classical sobriety with decorative motifs inspired by neo-Renaissance and naturalist vocabulary.
