In 1786, he created a prototype for a royal portrait intended to glorify the figure of the sovereign. The painting shown here is a derivative version of this initial work, now in the Château de Versailles. Replicated in several copies, these portraits were used to decorate official buildings, embassies and the galleries of illustrious personalities in large provincial residences. They could also be offered as diplomatic gifts.
