Gabriel REVEL (1642-1712) - Lot 85
Gabriel REVEL (1642-1712) Portrait of Louise Élisabeth Girard du Thil and her dog (1683-?) Oil on canvas Circa 1699 - 1700 202 x 109 cm (with frame: 210 x 159 cm) Signed Rebacking and old restorations Rare large carved wood frame with foliage simulating architecture Born into a noble Burgundian family, Louise Élisabeth Girard du Thil belonged to a line of Dijon's parliamentary upper middle class. Daughter of Louis Girard du Thil (1643-1686), seigneur du Thil, and Louise Marloud, dame de Romilly-sur-Seine (b. 1643), she grew up in a cultured environment attached to the values of the Ancien Régime. On September 5, 1699, she married François Chartraire (1685-1728), Seigneur de Bierre-lès-Semur, member of the Burgundy Parliament and Treasurer General of the States of Burgundy. Through this alliance, she entered one of the province's most influential circles, at the heart of the duchy's financial and administrative networks. Four children were born of this union, of whom there are many descendants. Widowed between 1705 and 1708, François Chartraire remarried on September 5, 1709, to Bénigne de La Michodière (1691-1761), daughter of Bertrand de La Michodière, seigneur de Noiry, and Claude Guillaume, from whom he also had two children. The painting represents Louise Élisabeth Girard du Thil, born in 1683 and died between 1705 and 1708. The large portrait was painted around 1699-1700, probably on the occasion of or shortly after her marriage to François Chartraire. The model's hairstyle, typical of late 17th-century fashion, confirms this dating. The painter Gabriel Revel, born in Château-Thierry, trained in Paris in the entourage of Charles Le Brun, whose stylistic influence he deeply felt. Accepted into the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in 1682, he distinguished himself with a body of work combining portraits, historical scenes and monumental settings. Settling in Dijon in the last decades of his life, Revel became one of the most sought-after portraitists of the Burgundian nobility and parliamentarians. His sober, elegant style, faithful to the classical spirit, already heralded the gentleness and sensitivity of the 18th century. The presumed portrait of Louise Élisabeth Girard du Thil is a perfect illustration of this style: the painter displays great finesse in rendering faces and fabrics, a measured sense of staging and a taste for discreet symbols.
