SALABERRY (Charles-Marie d'Irumberry de). Set of 10 manuscri - Lot 25
SALABERRY (Charles-Marie d'Irumberry de). Set of 10 manuscripts (8 signed autographs, one signed, and one in another hand incomplete from the end) and 2 letters (one signed autograph and one autograph). [Years 1830-1840]. Altogether some thirty pages, mainly in-4; one item with paper missing, affecting several words. Legitimist pamphlets of great virulence in the form of press articles, entitled among other things "De la nécessité et utilité de la Révolution de Juillet" [On the necessity and usefulness of the July Revolution], "L'âge de boue ou la comédie de quinze ans" [The age of mud or the comedy of fifteen years], "De la croix de St-Louis et de la décoration de Juillet" [On the cross of St. Louis and the July decoration], "Des houzards, des garde-meubles, des garde-robes, considérés sous les rapports politiques et moraux" [On l'événement récent" [The arrest of the Duchess of Berry]: "The nineteenth century, which many call in their slang the century of the Enlightenment, this century of perfection is still only thirty-two years old : it has already seen three crimes useless to their perpetrators; history will not say four, because the death of Mgr le Duc de Bourbon had its utility, its effect and its cause, which we will be able to know from one day to the next [found hanging from a espagnolette with his feet touching the ground, while in his will he bequeathed his immense fortune to one of Louis-Philippe I's sons]. Thus, in 1804, Bonaparte had the Duc d'Enghien kidnapped and legally murdered... The Revolutionaries were not at all grateful for the almost royal head he threw to them as a token of alliance... The Revolutionaries in turn committed the second gratuitous crime, and also made a great mistake, since it almost lost them and saved the monarchy on February 13th 1820... the assassination of Mgr le Duc de Berry... What other will than that of Providence ordered these men, who are exploiting the July revolution for their own profit, to carry out the arrest of H.R.H. the Duchess of Berry; this political error combines all the characteristics of cowardice, ineptitude and blindness...". Both letters concern the publication of his articles. One of the fiercest exponents of ultraculturism and later of legitimism, the Comte de Salaberry (1766-1847) emigrated during the Revolution, fought in Condé's army and then joined the ranks of the royalists in the Vendée wars. He was then elected and re-elected to the French Parliament from 1815 to 1830.
