TRAN VAN HA (1911-1974) - Lot 28
TRAN VAN HA (1911-1974) A pair of small lacquer panels with black, brown and gold decoration on an olive-green background, depicting villagers walking towards a thatched cottage among palm trees. Signed Tran Ha in red lacquer lower right. H. 25 x W. 36 cm. (Scratches) Note: Tran Van Ha was one of the artists trained at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine, which he joined in 1930 and from which he graduated in 1935, before touring Vietnam and Europe. Founded in Hanoi in 1925 by a Frenchman, Victor Tardieu, and a Vietnamese, Nam Son, the school was a direct offshoot of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Its aim was to reconcile Vietnamese traditions with a Western approach to art, creating a unique artistic expression represented by many of the artists who went on to become famous. Tran Van Ha rubbed shoulders with painters such as Mai-thu, Le Pho and Vû Cao Dàm, and lacquerers like Pham Hau, Tran Van Can and Gia Tri. He himself mastered several techniques, but chose to devote himself to lacquerware, becoming a renowned master lacquerer in the mid-twentieth century, and creating, around 1950, Ateliers Tran Ha in Saigon, where he supervised several lacquer artists. Expert: Cabinet Ansas, Papillon et de Léry.
