Jean-Baptiste GREUZE (1725-1805) - Lot 19
Jean-Baptiste GREUZE (1725-1805) Young girl with blue ribbon Canvas 53 x 42.5 cm Old restorations We would like to thank Yuricko Jackall for confirming the attribution after a visual examination. Provenance : Private collection, Paris Commentary: Our painting, depicting a young girl deep in thought, appears at a time when the Musée du Petit Palais is presenting a monographic exhibition on the painter Jean-Baptiste Greuze to mark the 300th anniversary of his birth. Entitled "L'enfance en lumière" ("Childhood in the spotlight"), the exhibition explores Greuze's relationship with childhood. A central theme in the artist's paintings and drawings, echoing the preoccupations of the philosophers Diderot, Rousseau and Condorcet, the artist invites us to reflect on the place of the child within the family, the responsibility of parents in his or her development, and the importance of education in the construction of his or her personality. With empathy, the artist questions the place of children in 18th-century society, their future and their emancipation. Expert : Cabinet Turquin
